Geometry as Light. Form as Permanence.

Rather than a simple transformation of appearance, Diamond King Kong Rhino reconstructs the language of sculpture through geometry. By faceting the rhino’s massive and primordial body, SHIH Li-Jen turns weight into reflection, and form into a structure capable of holding light, order, and duration.

The work fuses the diamond—nature’s hardest mineral and a longstanding emblem of prestige— with the archaic presence of the rhinoceros. Through precise faceting and hard-edge sculptural language, the animal’s volume is rearticulated as a contemporary body of brilliance and tension. The surface does not merely cover the form; it actively generates light and shifting perception.

The sculpture was also invited into a cross-disciplinary collaboration with Swarovski and exhibited in the brand’s 120th anniversary presentation. Here, crystal is not treated as ornament alone, but as an optical extension of the sculpture’s own logic of cutting, reflection, and visual intensity.

In the bronze version, rivets engraved with the name “Li-Ren” embody the artist’s long-held conviction: strength tempered by humility, and power grounded in benevolence. The white fiberglass version, by contrast, resonates with the near-absolute purity associated with the finest diamonds, redefining the rhino as a distilled and luminous presence.

If diamonds once belonged to the realm of rarity and privilege, they have since entered everyday life. From this shift, the artist imagines sculpture not as an inaccessible object, but as a presence capable of entering civic space and public experience. The rhino horn, transformed into the form of a thumb and fingerprint, signifies individuality while also suggesting the fragility of ancient life that demands protection.

Ultimately, the work is not about luxury alone. Beneath its brilliance lies a quieter question: how might we preserve reverence for life in a culture driven by possession, display, and desire? What remains is not merely radiance, but reflection.
