SHIH Li-Jen King Kong Rhino sculpture in a public space
SHIH Li-Jen|King Kong Rhino|Public Sculpture Project

Shih Li-Jen investigates the rhinoceros as a site of intersection between primordial memory and industrial surface, redefining the sculptural totem within the contemporary urban fabric.

The Civilizational Allegory

Shih Li-Jen’s practice functions as a critical inquiry into the endurance of life amidst the accelerating abstractions of the digital age. By grounding his work in the monumental presence of the rhinoceros, Shih recovers the ethical gravity of public sculpture.

His choice of bronze and stainless steel is not merely aesthetic but ontological; these materials demand a physical confrontation with time and scale.

The Rhino as Totem

Vajra and the Indestructible

In his King Kong series, Shih evokes the “Vajra” not as physical hardness, but as a spiritual constancy. The rhinoceros stands as a bulwark against the transience of contemporary life.

The Anthropocene Mark

The fingerprint motif engraved upon the horn functions as a civilizational seal. It signifies the irreversible human imprint upon the natural world.

Reflective Materiality

The high-polish surfaces dissolve the boundary between sculpture and environment. Through reflection, the city is absorbed into the work.

Archaic Resonance

By referencing ancient ritual vessels, Shih situates contemporary metalwork within a deep historical lineage, treating sculpture as a container for collective memory.

An Urban Intervention

King Kong Rhino by SHIH Li-Jen installed in an urban or architectural setting

The King Kong Rhino Project is an evolving intervention that recontextualizes the relationship between the artwork, the site, and the public. It is a nomadic monument that has left its trace across Venice, Shanghai, Taipei, and other cultural landscapes.

By inserting these metallic titans into varied architectural contexts—from historic stone to modern glass—Shih disrupts the visual routine of the city. The rhinoceros acts as a catalyst for public memory, a silent witness through which the city observes its own reflection and considers its shared destiny.
