About

Artist Biography

Shih Li-Jen is a contemporary sculptor known internationally for his rhinoceros sculptures. His work explores the relationship between human civilization, ecological awareness, and symbolic forms in contemporary art. In an era increasingly dominated by digital abstraction and environmental crisis, Shih returns to the enduring presence of physical materials such as bronze and stainless steel to construct a sculptural language rooted in permanence and historical consciousness.

Within his works, the Confucian concept of Ren (humanistic empathy) intersects with the structural force associated with Western modernism. This synthesis produces sculptures that carry both spiritual symbolism and strong physical presence, transforming the rhinoceros into a contemporary cultural totem that transcends geographic and cultural boundaries.

Symbolic Motif: The Rhino

The rhinoceros is the central motif in Shih Li-Jen’s artistic practice. Inspired by reflections on endangered species and ecological imbalance, he integrates the visual language of the human thumb and fingerprint into the horn of the rhino. This gesture symbolizes humanity’s unique identity and responsibility toward the natural world.

Through this transformation, the rhino becomes more than an animal form. It evolves into a mythic contemporary creature—a symbolic guardian of the Earth, embodying both strength and protection. The fingerprint motif represents the collective commitment of humanity to coexist with nature.

International Presence

Shih Li-Jen’s sculptures have been presented in major international exhibitions including the Venice Biennale, the Salzburg Festival, and the Shanghai World Expo. His monumental works are installed in public spaces across multiple cities, where they function as cultural landmarks connecting art, urban environments, and ecological awareness.
