Between Calm and Rupture
The series Disclose You is among Cao Hui’s most recognizable bodies of work. Gorillas, pigs, cattle, and sheep are enlarged into monumental presences, almost recalling the authority of classical statuary. Their expressions are composed, even gentle; the skin is delicately colored and translucent, with a sheen akin to human flesh.
Yet the true shock lies beneath the surface. Under the lifted skin, exposed muscle, tendon, and flesh appear with an almost anatomical precision. This collision between outward calm and inner rupture structures the work around a striking duality: one side classical, quiet, and approachable; the other sharp, visceral, and destabilizing.
Realism Recast
Cao Hui’s early practice grew out of realist training, but realism in his work is no longer simple imitation. It becomes a means of entering a psychological and spiritual field, a language through which the hidden structures of reality may be disclosed. Representation is thus transformed into narrative, metaphor, and thought.
This shift can already be seen in his 2003–2005 series The Children of Art History, where canonical images are reassembled and reinterpreted. There, experimentation with sculptural language already intersects with a critical dialogue with tradition. In Disclose You, however, that dialogue moves decisively toward contemporary existence and social reality.
Animal Allegory and Modernity
Cao Hui does not turn to animals in order to escape reality. Rather, animals become his means of re-entering the human condition. The evolutionary proximity of the gorilla to the human, or the domesticated status of livestock under human control, turns these figures into reflections of social structure and historical violence.
In this sense, Disclose You may be understood as an allegory of modernization. It addresses not simply the fate of animals, nor merely the spectacle of violence, but the concealed fractures, contradictions, and imbalance embedded within the modern condition. Hyperrealism brings the viewer close to reality, while allegory shifts that reality into a more disturbing register.
A Humanitarian Warning
The force of Cao Hui’s work lies not in realism alone, but in his careful construction of ultimate tension. His sculpture is sharp, direct, and at times painful because formal precision gives way to psychic rupture. It is both an expression of personal urgency and a warning: when modernity advances in the name of civilization, what is truly being laid bare—the animal’s body, or the interior of human nature itself?
